Land use evaluation in Vjosa Valley

You are here

The first phase of land-use study was initially based on an agrarian report prepared by CeRPHAAL in collaboration with a local agronomist, Krenar Ismaili. The information indicates that agriculture has historically been the basic activity in the Vjosa Valley, while the main cultivated products seem to have been cereals and vineyards.

An entire terracing system, built at least since the medieval times, and used until lately was documented in the flysch hill slopes. It was perhaps used not only for the protection of land-parcels from the frequent erosion of flysch strata, but also for cleaning the terrains, maintaining clay deposits and enriching the shallow and poor soils of these terrains of the Valley.
